Death is not a subject that we all like to talk about, but we have to think about what would happen to our families in the event that something were to happen to us. Godly parents provide for their families according to I Timothy 5:8 which says, “But if anyone does not provide for his own, and especially for those of his household, he has denied the faith and is worse than an unbeliever.” Christians must provide for their families, as they have a higher degree of responsibility toward them in relation to unsaved people.
The Christian parent can ensure that the family is protected through savings in the event of an emergency, honest labor, and protection of his/her income in the event of death. Even though the labor laws have changed to increase the earning power of women, men still have a greater capacity to earn money and in many cases, they are still being paid at higher levels than women. The twenty-five female Fortune 500 chief executive officers earn salaries below their male counterparts. For every dollar that a man earns, a woman earns sixty-nine cents. http://thinkprogress.org/economy/2012/05/03/477145/ceo-female-pay-gap/
Regardless of how much a woman earns in relation to a male, the women heads of household can still undertake efforts to protect their families in the event of their death. The Bible describe a person who fails to protect the family against loss as foolish. Proverbs 11:29 states, “Whoever brings ruin on their family will inherit only wind, and the fool will be servant to the wise.” An irresponsible person will not have authority over anyone who does take steps to protect their family. They will not inherit the blessings which God promises in Deuteronomy 28. They will be the tail instead of the head, beneath, rather than above, and they will borrow instead of lend.
All over the world, women and children are being left behind by men who decide to leave their families in pursuit of self-gratification. Many of the problems stem from unemployment, inadequate employment, mental illness, or substance abuse. Women often take the initiative to support the children as best they can. This is not a new problem and is not likely to change anytime in the near future. Women who are in this situation should also take steps to educate themselves on their responsibilities in protecting their children in the event of their death, in the same way that men do.
When a man does the right thing for his family, the Bible says, “Your wife will be a fruitful vine within your house; your children will be like olive shoots around your table,” (Proverbs 128:3). What a lovely vision of a secure family! Additionally, the Bible states that “The wicked die and disappear, but the family of the godly stands firm.” When a family enjoys financial as well as emotional security, they are enjoying the blessings of God, who meets all of their needs. The children feel safe and can do well in school, developing their talents and gifts which the Lord has given them.
The Lord will provide for those who do not have the financial security of responsible parents, but if will be in the form of entitlements and gifts which the Lord provides. If they are wise enough to pray and accept wise counsel, they can learn to take responsibility for themselves and their families so that they will never lack anything. They will also learn to hearken unto the Lord’s voice so that they can avoid the calamity which can destroy them, (Deuteronomy 28:1).
