How God Prospered Abram

The Old Testament is full of stories about the Israelites and how God fulfilled his promises to them. One of the people, Abram, received many blessings from God because of his obedience and faithfulness.

In Genesis 12:1 God told Abram where to go. “Genesis 12:1
The LORD had said to Abram, “Go from your country, your people and your father’s household to the land I will show you.” Many times, God will show us where to go and what to do. If we are in a relationship with God and know his voice, then he will reveal his plan to us. However, we must trust God in order to obey him. Just imagine where we would be if Abram had not listened to God.

God showed Abram the land where the Canaanites happened to be living and God told him he was giving him this land. He built an altar and because there was a famine in the land, Abram took his family to Egypt. After an experience with the Egyptians, he became very wealthy. God had fulfilled his promise to Abram. Every time God told Abram where to go he built an altar to the Lord. This was an act of worship.

God blessed Abram because of his obedience and his acts of worship. We can learn from the story of Abram that if we remain faithful to God, not only will he meet our needs, but he will bless us beyond our imagination. Abram was living around idolaters, people who were not worshiping God. While the idolaters suffered the consequences for their sin, Abram came under the protection of God and was blessed.

God had a plan for Abram and the fulfillment of the plan was contingent on whether Abram followed God’s command. When he obeyed the commands, God blessed him. Abram became the father of many nations through his two sons who were born to him very late in life.

The most outstanding quality about Abram was his faith. He had enough faith in God to do what he was commanded to do, no questions asked. How many times do we doubt what God is telling us because of our disbelief? How many times has God told you to do things and you did not do them because you did not understand? God cannot bless us without our cooperation.

God told Abram he was giving him land, that he would prosper him, and that he would have two sons, even though his wife could not have children and even though Abram was in is eighties. From this story we learn that with God, all things are possible, that God fulfills his promises to us, and that we have to be faithful and obedient to God’s commands. If we are not obedient, we miss out on God’s blessings.

It is also interesting to note how God communicated with Abram and how Abram communicated with God.. In Genesis 12:1 he spoke to Abram. In Genesis 12:7, he appeared to Abram. In Genesis 13: 4, Abram built and altar and called on the name of the Lord. In Genesis 13:14, God spoke to Abram. In Genesis 14:19, 20, God pronounced a blessing on Abram through the King of Sodom. In Genesis 15:1 and 17:1, God appeared to Abram in a vision. God spoke to Abram at different times in his life about his plan for prosperity. To insure you are hearing from God and doing what he says, it would be a good idea to write things down so that you can reflect on them later. If you miss a command of God, there is no telling when the plan can be fulfilled. Therefore, it is important to stay in a relationship with God and obey his commands.

If there are people or situations in our lives that are keeping us from hearing from God, we have to make adjustments. We will gain more by listening to God than by becoming enmeshed in the things of the world.
