Happy New Year! As we begin another new year, I am sure some of us resolve to spend our money more wisely. But, why is it that some of us still have not learned to manage money wisely?
The first step in managing money wisely is to tithe so that we will always have what we need. We should tithe at least 10% of our gross income. (Better to err on the high side – God is worth it!) That should be set aside as soon as you cash your check, because we should put God first. If we don’t tithe, we will not have enough to take care of our needs. The devourer will be at work taking our money – we will pay too much, we will come up short, we will lose money, someone may steal it from us. We don’t want that to happen. Proverbs 3:9, 10 says, “Honour the Lord with thy substance, and with the firstfruits of all thine increase: So shall thy barns be filled with plenty, and thy presses shall burst out with new wine.”
If we do not bring tithes into the church, here is what Malachi 3:10, 11 says,“Bring ye all the tithes into the storehouse, that there may be meat in mine house, and prove me now herewith, saith the Lord of hosts, if I will not open you the windows of heaven, and pour you out a blessing, that there shall not be room enough to receive it. And I will rebuke the devourer for your sakes, and he shall not destroy the fruits of your ground; neither shall your vine cast her fruit before the time in the field, saith the Lord of hosts.” Notice how God says he will rebuke the devourer. He will keep the enemy from leading us to mismanage our money. That will not happen if we do not tithe. So here is the solution to the problem with spending money unwisely.
I have countless stories of how I paid much less for items that others had to pay full price. I remember standing in line at the town hall waiting to ask for copies of a public document. The woman in front of me asked for the same report that I wanted. The clerk yelled at her and told her she had to pay $25.00 for the report. When I got there, I was not charged. I have gotten things on sale. I bought a very nice comforter for my bed for $15.00. It was marked down from $150.00. The Lord will lead you to places where you will pay less money that you anticipated. So, keep this in mind this year and make it a habit to tithe. Don’t worry about how you think this money will be spent. Just remember God will bless you!
